Even though precious to the touch, velvet isn't as delicate a material as you might think. The one trick to caring for velvet is to refrain from cleaning it while it's wet. If you get caught in the rain or mud, let your shoes air dry first before you brush them clean. For really persistent stains, try using a solution of washing up liquid with water - however, make sure to test it on a discreet area first. It's crucial to use spray protection, too - the first step is to prevent the stains before they even occur!
