“Keep your distance” seemed to be the most heard phrase of 2020. We have all became more conscious of the space around us.
Inspired by our new normal, Tracey Neuls launches her new shoe for SS21 called ‘Space’. A rubber circle orbits the foot, hovering around the ankle sculpturally. Attached to an incredibly comfortable all day shoe, these circles glide effortlessly with your stride. Drawing parallels between the new society, they serve to point out that there had already been a natural distance between the feet and that what might at first seem unfamiliar - can be quite normal.
As a designer Tracey Neuls has often focused her attention to the space around the shapes we see. In her iconic ‘BigTop’ design, she fills the space above the arch with a circle of leather. In Japanese there is a special word for the space around objects called ‘Ma’. Being mindful of this space might open up a new fashion dialogue.
